    About Venous Thromboembolism (Blood Clots)

    Overview

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a term referring to blood clots in the veins. VTE includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE).

DVT occurs when a blood clot develops in a deep vein, most commonly in the lower leg, thigh, or pelvis, but can also occur in the arm. PE occurs when a part of the clot breaks off and travels to the lungs, which can be life-threatening.

DVT and PE are often underdiagnosed and are serious but often preventable medical conditions.

It is important to know about VTE because it can happen to anybody and can cause serious illness, disability, and in some cases, death.
